Which refrigerant

Which refrigerant your car uses.

Most cars on the road now use one of two refrigerants: the older R-134a or the newer R-1234yf. R-1234yf must be serviced on equipment built to its own standards. The label under the hood says which one your car has.

  • An EU directive from 2011 required a low global warming refrigerant on new car platforms.
  • BMW switched all its models to R-1234yf over 2017 and 2018. A BMW built before 2017 is therefore likely to use R-134a, and a later one R-1234yf.
  • In 2012 Daimler showed R-1234yf igniting in simulated crashes and kept the older refrigerant in its designs for a time.
  • An estimated 90 percent of new US vehicles used R-1234yf by 2022.
  • R-1234yf is mildly flammable, which is why its service machines need anti-arcing parts.

Why R-1234yf service is different

The refrigerant and the equipment rules are different, and the two refrigerants must never be mixed. Check the label before anyone connects a machine to your car. See equipment and the law.

How we diagnose

How we find out why the AC blows warm.

A system low on refrigerant has a leak, so topping it up only buys time. These are the steps, in order.

  1. Your description. When it blows warm, whether it is all the time or only at idle, and any smell or noise.
  2. Module scan. We read the climate control and body modules for faults, because a fan, sensor or flap fault can look like a refrigerant problem. See diagnostics.
  3. Refrigerant check. We identify the refrigerant and check the system pressures.
  4. Leak test. We find where the refrigerant is escaping before any part is replaced.
  5. Electrical and mechanical checks. The compressor, the blower motor, fuses and relays, and the condenser fans.
  6. Quote before repair. You get the cause and the price before any part is replaced. Florida law requires the shop to prepare a written estimate before any diagnostic work or repair on all but the smallest jobs, unless you waive it in writing; see your rights under Florida law.
  7. Repair, recover, vacuum and recharge. The system is evacuated, held under vacuum to check for leaks and recharged to the maker’s specification.

Common causes

What usually goes wrong.

These are the usual causes behind each complaint, and the parts BMR Auto repairs or replaces when one of them has failed.

What you noticeUsual causes
The AC blows warm or hotLow refrigerant from a leak, or a failing compressor
A noise when the AC is onThe compressor or a loose belt
Weak airflow or no air at allThe blower motor, an electrical fault or a blown fuse
A musty or moldy smellMold or bacteria in the system, often with an old cabin filter
The heater blows coldA faulty thermostat or a blocked heater core
Uneven heat, overheating or a leakThe heater control valve, the heater core or a hose
Climate controls frozen or not respondingOn a McLaren 12C or 650S, the IRIS infotainment or body module. See McLaren

By make

Air conditioning by make.

Only what is documented for each make is below. For anything else, call with the model and what the AC is doing.

BMW AC and heater repair

Likely R-134a before 2017 and R-1234yf after the 2017 to 2018 switch; check the label

BMW’s 2026 maintenance booklet has the cabin microfilter changed at every second oil service, so an old filter is the first thing to check for weak airflow or a smell. BMR Auto scans the climate and body modules before it connects the gauges, since a fan, sensor or flap fault can look like a refrigerant problem. BMW service

Mercedes-Benz and AMG

Refrigerant by year: check the under-hood label

Daimler kept R-134a in its designs for a time after its 2012 crash tests, so the label on your car matters more than the model year. A Mercedes-Benz dealer lists the cabin filter as part of Service B. Mercedes-Benz service

McLaren AC repair

12C and 650S

On these cars the climate control runs through the IRIS infotainment system, so an IRIS fault can leave you with no climate control at all. An Ontario McLaren specialist reports that a 650S IRIS reboot can leave the climate control stuck in its last setting. A complaint of no cold air can be an electronics fault, and BMR Auto finds it with a module scan. McLaren service

Rolls-Royce

Ghost, Wraith, Dawn, Cullinan

The Ghost, Wraith and Dawn run on BMW electronics, so a climate fault on them is read the same way as on a BMW, starting with the modules. Call us with the VIN and what the system is doing. Rolls-Royce service

Bentley, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Aston Martin and Range Rover

Check the label under the hood

Tell us the model, the year and the refrigerant on the label, and describe when the air turns warm. We will tell you what the diagnosis involves and quote it. Every brand we service

Heating and HVAC

Heating, airflow and the rest of the system.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning share the same controls and ducts.

HVAC repair

  • A heater that blows cold usually points to the thermostat or a blocked heater core.
  • Uneven heat, overheating or a leak can come from the heater control valve.
  • Weak airflow can be the blower motor, a fuse or the cabin filter.

What we repair

BMR Auto repairs and replaces compressors, blower motors, heater cores, heater control valves, thermostats, hoses, belts and fuses, and finds and fixes refrigerant leaks.

Cooling system faults by make, such as coolant hoses and fittings, are covered on engine and transmission.

Equipment and the law

Why the machine and the certificate matter.

Federal rules set who may service a car’s air conditioning for pay and what equipment they must use. Ask any shop which machine it uses on your refrigerant.

The 2021 EPA rule

An EPA rule published March 24, 2021 and in effect from April 23, 2021 adopted three SAE standards for R-1234yf service equipment: J2843 for recover, recycle and recharge machines, J2851 for recover-only machines used on contaminated refrigerant, and J3030 for machines that service both R-1234yf and R-134a. Shops that service R-1234yf systems for pay must use certified equipment. A summary by MSA Safety, which sells refrigerant analyzers, warns that violators can face large fines.

What the machine must do

According to the MSA Safety summary, the machines need anti-arcing switches, motors and solenoids because the refrigerant is mildly flammable. They must identify the refrigerant to SAE J2927 or J2912, send contaminated refrigerant to a separate SAE J2851 machine and run a vacuum decay test at the end of service.

Section 609 certification

Technicians who service car air conditioning for pay must be certified under Section 609 of the Clean Air Act. EPA does not require a new certificate for R-1234yf, and the updated MACS training program, launched January 1, 2015, covers it, according to the trade publication UnderhoodService.

South Florida

Air conditioning in South Florida.

Here the AC runs almost every day of the year, so a slow leak or a tired compressor shows up sooner than it would up north. Small signs are worth a call before the system quits in August traffic.

  • Change the cabin filter on time. BMW’s 2026 maintenance booklet has it changed at every second oil service. See scheduled maintenance.
  • A musty smell usually means mold or bacteria in the system.
  • Air that turns warm at idle and cools again on the move can point to the condenser fans, which we check in the diagnosis.

Seasonal owners

If the car sat for months while you were away, run the AC before the first long drive and call us if the air is slow to cool or smells. See also the area we serve.

Quotes

How BMR Auto prices AC work.

A recharge that leaks out again in a month is money thrown away, and on a Rolls-Royce or a McLaren the parts behind the dash are not cheap either. BMR Auto finds the real fault and prices the repair that fixes it, as we would for a member of our own family. When something can wait, we tell you, the way KJ, who owns BMR Auto, did with the project car in the review below.

JobWhat it involves
AC performance checkModule scan, refrigerant identified, pressures and vent temperature checked
Recover, vacuum and rechargeRefrigerant recovered, the system held under vacuum to check for leaks, then recharged to the maker’s specification
Leak detectionFinding where the refrigerant escapes, before any part is replaced
Cabin filterBy model
Compressor replacementBy model, with the recharge
Blower motorBy model
Heater core or heater control valveBy model

Prices depend on the car and the refrigerant. Call or send the VIN with what the AC is doing, and we will quote your car. Florida law requires the shop to prepare a written estimate before any diagnostic work or repair on all but the smallest jobs, unless you waive it in writing; see your rights under Florida law.

Servicing your car at an independent shop does not by itself void the factory warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act bars a maker from making its warranty depend on its own brand of parts or service unless they are provided free, and the FTC says a dealer cannot deny warranty coverage because routine maintenance or repairs were done by someone else. A maker or dealer can still deny coverage for a part damaged by a defective or badly installed outside part, but it must prove the outside part caused the damage. Work the warranty provides free can be required at the maker’s chosen shops, usually the dealer.

What owners say about BMR Auto

One Google review so far describes AC work. The other speaks about our diagnostics in general.

The one review about air conditioning

“I rarely leave reviews but this one is much deserved. KJ was awesome. I recently finished my project car and needed AC vacuum/recharged. KJ was really helpful letting me know about my compressor[’s] condition and other things I should plan to fix/adjust. Very nice place and honest people. Highly recommend. I’ll definitely be coming here for anything BMW.”

On our diagnostics

“This mechanic repair shop was very professional and polite. KJ provided detailed diagnostics information about my vehicle and was very thorough about each item that was found on my vehicle. I would highly recommend this mechanic for any repair work on your vehicle. I was very impressed especially because I had recently visited another repair shop in the area and was highly disappointed with their customer service. Overall I had a great experience and would recommend this repair shop to anyone who wants a[n] honest mechanic who’s not going to give you the run around. Great customer service!!! The shop was clean and they provided refreshments.”

Questions about car air conditioning

My AC blows warm. Is it just low on refrigerant?

If it is low, it has a leak, so a top-up alone only lasts until the refrigerant escapes again. BMR Auto finds the leak before it recharges the system.

Which refrigerant does my car use?

The label under the hood says. As a rule of thumb, BMW moved all its models to R-1234yf over 2017 and 2018, so an earlier BMW is likely R-134a and a later one R-1234yf.

Why is R-1234yf service different from R-134a?

The refrigerant is different, and it must be serviced on certified machines built to SAE standards written for it, which EPA adopted in 2021. The two refrigerants must never be mixed in one system.

My McLaren’s climate control froze. Is that the AC?

Often it is the electronics. On the 12C and 650S, the climate control runs through the IRIS infotainment system, so an IRIS fault can stop the climate control from responding. A scan of the modules finds it. See diagnostics.

Why does my AC smell musty?

Usually mold or bacteria in the system, and often an old cabin filter. On 2026 BMWs, BMW’s booklet has the cabin filter changed at every second oil service.

My heater blows cold. Is that the same problem?

Usually not. A heater that blows cold points to the thermostat or a blocked heater core, which are part of the cooling system. See heating.

How do I get a price for AC work?

Call (954) 947-0057 or send the car and what the AC is doing through the quote form. BMR Auto diagnoses the system first and gives you the cause and the price before any part is replaced.

Can I recharge it myself with a can from the parts store?

A can adds refrigerant without finding the leak, so the air turns warm again once it escapes. Some cans also contain a sealer. If one has been used on your car, tell us before the system is connected to a machine.

Do you work on Rolls-Royce and exotic car air conditioning?

Yes. The Rolls-Royce Ghost, Wraith and Dawn run on BMW electronics, and climate faults on the McLaren 12C and 650S often start in the IRIS system, so both begin with a module scan. See by make.
