What a coating does

What a ceramic coating does, and what it does not.

A coating protects the finish you already have. It is worth knowing its limits before you pay for one.

What it does

A ceramic coating adds a thin, hard layer over the clear coat. Dirt and water hold on to it less than to bare paint, so the car is easier to wash, and the coating takes the first contact from sun, bird droppings and tree sap, which gives you more time to wash them off.

Professional coating lines use separate products for different surfaces. One maker’s automotive line, for example, has one coating for paint, trim and badges, and others for glass, for wheels, and for leather, vinyl, fabric and carpet.

What it does not do

  • It does not stop rock chips. Coating makers sell paint protection film as a product line of its own, separate from their coatings.
  • It does not make the paint scratch-proof.
  • It does not remove swirls or scratches already in the paint. Those come out in paint correction, before the coating goes on.
  • On matte paint, products with silicones, waxes or carnauba raise the gloss, so only a product made for matte paint should be used.

Coating and paint protection film

Paint protection film is a clear film applied over the paint to protect it from chips. Coating makers sell it as its own product line, separate from their coatings, so the two are different purchases.

On many BMW and Porsche bumpers, film has limits. BMW says no film, clear or colored, may be applied over the areas its radar sensors see through, and Porsche says its bumpers must not be wrapped or covered with decals in the radar transmission area. Film on those cars has to leave the radar zones bare.

After a repaint, we wait for the new paint to cure before it is coated or filmed. See collision and body.

Chosen for your paint

How the coating is chosen for each paint finish.

BMR Auto uses professional coatings from the top brands, at the highest grade in their makers’ ranges for hardness, depth and shine. Paint finishes differ, so the product and the preparation are chosen for the finish on your car. The coating is applied by professionals who specialize in the finest and most exotic cars and coat only cars of that class.

Gloss clear coat

Most cars wear color under a clear coat. The clear coat is corrected first to take out swirls, and the coating then locks in that finish for the deepest shine the paint can give.

Matte and satin

A matte or satin finish must keep its sheen. It is never polished, and it gets a coating made for matte paint, one that protects the surface without adding gloss.

Single-stage paint

On single-stage paint, common on older and classic cars, the color itself is the top layer. Correction is kept light because every pass removes color, and the coating goes straight onto the paint.

Soft clear coats

A soft clear coat marks easily, even from careful washing. It needs gentle correction, and a hard coating on top gives it a tougher surface to wear.

Hard clear coats

A hard clear coat resists marks but takes longer to correct. The work is slower, and the coating keeps the corrected finish from dulling.

Paint protection film

Film has its own surface, so a car with film gets a coating made to bond to film. On BMW and Porsche bumpers, the film itself has to leave the radar zones bare. See coating and film.

Where

Indoors, in the BMR Auto shop at 325 W Dixie Highway, Dania Beach.

Turnaround

7 days, which leaves time for paint correction and for the coating to cure before the car gets wet.

What changes the quote

The size of the car, how much paint correction the paint needs, and whether you want wheels, glass or the interior coated as well.

A fair price on a fine car

A coating on a Rolls-Royce or a Lamborghini is a real purchase, and we price it fairly. BMR Auto has grown by treating its clients and their cars with respect and by charging what we would charge a friend or a family member. That is the reason so many owners of exotic cars in South Florida trust us with their paint as well as their engines.

The process

What happens during the 7 days.

  1. Drop-off or pickup. We look over the paint with you and note chips, scratches and earlier repairs.
  2. Wash and decontamination. The car is washed by hand, and bonded contamination such as iron fallout and tar is taken off the paint.
  3. Paint inspection. We inspect every panel before any polishing, so you know what correction the paint needs.
  4. Paint correction. Machine polishing takes out swirls and light scratches before the coating locks the finish in. Matte panels are never polished.
  5. Panel prep. The panels are wiped down to remove polishing oils, so the coating bonds to the paint.
  6. Coating. Five layers on the paint, each given its time to set before the next.
  7. Cure. The car stays inside and dry while the coating cures.
  8. Handover. We go over the finish with you and give you the coating maker’s written care instructions.

Why it takes 7 days

Paint correction on a large car takes time, and each layer of the coating needs time to set. The car also has to stay dry while the coating cures, and it leaves only when it is ready.

If the car is due for service, we can do it the same week. See maintenance.

Matte paint

Matte paint, such as BMW Frozen, must never be polished.

The matte effect is in the clear coat only. Matte paint cannot be polished, so a mark in it cannot be polished out the way it can on gloss paint.

BMW’s guidance for its Frozen paint, as published by BMWBLOG, says:

  • Do not polish or wax it.
  • Do not clean it mechanically, with buffers or in automatic car washes.
  • Wash it by hand with a soap made for matte paint.
  • Use only matte-safe sealants that contain no wax.

Products with silicones, waxes or carnauba raise the gloss of matte paint or damage its clear coat.

At BMR Auto, matte panels are washed and prepared by hand, never polished, and coated with a product made for matte paint.

A scratched matte panel cannot be spot-repaired or blended. BMW calls for the whole panel to be refinished edge to edge. See paint repair.

Care after coating

Looking after a coated car in South Florida.

Follow the coating maker’s written aftercare instructions, which we give you at handover. They say how long to keep the car dry and when the first wash can be done.

Washing

  • Wash the car by hand with a gentle car soap, and dry it rather than letting it air-dry.
  • Keep brushes and harsh chemicals off the coating.
  • On matte paint, BMW says no automatic car washes and only soap made for matte paint.

South Florida conditions

  • Wash off lovebug remains and bird droppings within a day or two. Left to bake in the sun, they can mark the finish.
  • Sprinkler water leaves mineral spots as it dries, so wipe the car down after it gets wet.
  • Near the coast, salt settles on the car, so wash it more often.
  • Park in shade or a garage when you can. A coating does not keep the sun from heating the paint.

Getting the car here

Pickup and delivery.

Our concierge service can collect the car in an enclosed carrier and bring it back once the coating has cured. Concierge pricing is quoted for your car and your address.

Paint damage first

Chips, scratches or a damaged panel.

If a panel is damaged, it is repaired first, and the new paint is left to cure before the coating goes on.

Questions about ceramic coating

How much does ceramic coating cost at BMR Auto?

It depends on the size of the car, how much paint correction it needs and which surfaces you want coated. Call BMR Auto or send the car, its color and a few photos of the paint, and we will quote it.

How long will you have my car?

7 days. If you would rather not drive it in, our concierge service can collect it and bring it back. See concierge.

Is a coating worth it on a brand-new car?

Often, yes. New cars can arrive with marks from transport and dealer preparation, so we inspect the paint first and tell you whether it needs correction before the coating goes on.

Should I get a ceramic coating or paint protection film?

They do different jobs. A coating makes the paint easier to keep clean but does not stop rock chips; film is the product for chips, and coating makers sell it separately from their coatings. On BMW and Porsche cars with radar sensors behind the bumper, film has to leave the radar zones bare.

Will the coating stop scratches and swirl marks?

No coating makes paint scratch-proof. Swirls and light scratches already in the paint are polished out before the coating goes on, and careful hand washing helps keep new ones from forming.

How long does a coating last in the Florida sun?

It depends on the coating, how the car is washed and where it is parked. A car that is garaged and washed by hand keeps its coating longer than one that sits outside. We give you the coating maker’s terms and care instructions at handover.

How do I wash a coated car?

By hand, with a gentle car soap, and by the coating maker’s written instructions, which we give you at handover. Dry the car rather than letting it air-dry, because South Florida water leaves spots.

Can you coat matte paint like BMW Frozen?

Yes, with a coating made for matte paint. Matte paint is never polished or waxed. BMW says to wash it by hand with matte soap and to use only matte-safe sealants with no wax.

Which coating will you use on my car?

The one that suits its paint. BMR Auto uses professional coatings from the top brands, at the highest grade in their makers’ ranges for hardness, depth and shine, and picks the product for the finish: a gloss clear coat, matte or satin paint, single-stage paint, a soft or hard clear coat, or paint protection film. We tell you which product we will use when we quote the car.

Do you coat the wheels, glass and interior?

Tell us what you want coated when you ask for a quote. Professional coating lines have separate products for glass, wheels and interior surfaces, and the quote lists what is included.

Tell us the car, its color and whether the paint is matte.
