Collision and body repair for BMW, luxury and exotic cars in South Florida.

BMR Auto in Dania Beach repairs BMW, luxury and exotic cars after a collision and handles the insurance claim. After a crash the electronics need as much work as the panels, so we scan the car before and after the repair and code and program replacement modules. Structural work that needs the maker’s restricted parts goes to the maker’s network, and this page says which.

Electronics after a crash

After the body work, the electronics have to be checked and coded.

Many of our Google reviews are about BMW electronics: diagnostics, programming and coding, and module repair. After a collision, that work matters as much as the body repair. Here is what it involves.

Scans before and after

BMW’s position statement on pre- and post-repair scanning covers every BMW with OBD II. The first scan records the faults the crash left; the second shows what is still stored after the repair. BMR Auto scans a collision car before teardown and again after the repair, and you can have both reports.

The safety battery terminal

Many BMW cars have a safety battery terminal, a pyrotechnic disconnect on the positive battery cable, that can fire in a crash. BMW sets the order: find the cause, read and record the airbag control unit faults, fix them, clear the fault memory, then replace the terminal. When a BMW will not start after a collision, it is one of the first things we check.

Airbag faults

On BMW, the airbag control unit faults are read, recorded and repaired before the fault memory is cleared. We read and save them with dealer-level diagnostic software before anything is cleared.

Module coding

A replacement module generally has to be programmed and coded to the car with dealer-level software. On Mercedes-Benz, replacing an airbag unit needs SCN coding through Mercedes’ servers, which takes a live factory connection. See programming and coding.

Radar and camera calibration

On BMW and Mini cars with camera-based driver support, the camera has to be calibrated after a windshield replacement, and cars with a head-up display need a special original windshield. Ask about calibration when you send the photos, so the estimate includes it.

Bumpers over radar

BMW marks radar zones on its bumper diagrams and says no stickers or film, clear or colored, may be attached there. In the radar area of a Porsche bumper, Porsche bars paint, wrap and plastic welding, and the calibration needed afterward varies by model, year and equipment. BMR Auto checks the maker’s bumper repair limits before deciding to repair or replace. On BMW, and on Porsche, which bars wraps there, paint protection film that goes back on after a repair has to leave the radar zones bare.

What we do and what goes out

What BMR Auto repairs, and what goes to the maker’s body shop.

Every make we service mixes high-strength steel, aluminum and, on several models, structural carbon fiber. The makers steer structural repair to their own networks, and BMW and Mercedes-Benz sell the structural parts only to shops they have trained and equipped. We found no Florida statute that limits structural repair to certified shops. Without the restricted parts, though, the repair cannot follow the maker’s method, so that work goes to the maker’s network and BMR Auto tells you so in the estimate.

By make

What can be done here, and what goes to the maker.

Each maker builds its bodies differently and sets its own rules for structural repair. Below is how each car is built, what BMR Auto does on it after a collision, and the work the maker keeps for its own network.

BMW and Mini

The carbon-core 7 Series (G11 and G12, from 2016) puts carbon fiber in the B- and C-pillars, rockers, roof bows, tunnel and rear deck. BMW says badly damaged structural carbon is replaced by section, with the cuts made in steel areas. Since 2021 BMW has sold nearly 75 carbon structural parts for the i3, i8 and G12 7 Series only to shops that completed BMW Body and Paint training and hold the required tools, approving each order through a dealer. It added more than 100 aluminum structural parts in March 2023, structural steel parts in October 2024, and the 3 Series and other models in June 2026. BMW’s paint and windshield guidance covers Mini as well.

At BMR Auto

BMW and Mini electronics are our main work, including scans, airbag faults, the safety battery terminal, and module coding and programming after the repair. Bolt-on panels, bumpers, headlights and cosmetic paint as well.

Structural sectioning and any repair that needs a restricted part. BMW certified centers issue a BMW Certificate of Repair.

Rolls-Royce

The Phantom VIII and the Cullinan sit on an aluminum spaceframe. The first-generation Ghost (2009 to 2020), the Wraith and the Dawn run on BMW F-series electronics. Rolls-Royce coachlines are hand-painted at Goodwood as the last step of manufacture, with one line running about six meters.

Structural work on the aluminum spaceframe of the Phantom VIII and the Cullinan.

Bentley

The third-generation Continental GT body mixes steel and aluminum in sheet, cast and extruded form. Its exterior panels are aluminum, except a composite boot lid. Bentley is a Volkswagen Group brand, and its cars are diagnosed and programmed through the Group’s factory systems.

At BMR Auto

Bolt-on panels, cosmetic paint and electronic checks after the repair.

Mercedes-Benz and AMG

Under the aluminum repair rules Mercedes published in 2018, there are four repair levels. Level 1 covers bolted parts, Level 2 bonded and riveted parts, Level 3 welded non-structural parts and Level 3+ welded structural parts. Only Elite Certified centers, which must be dealer-owned, may buy aluminum structural components, and technicians without Mercedes aluminum training are not authorized for Level 3 or 3+. Extruded aluminum members may not be straightened at all.

At BMR Auto

Level 1 bolted parts and cosmetic paint. Replacing an airbag unit needs SCN coding through Mercedes’ servers, so we tell you up front where that step is done.

Level 2, 3 and 3+ work on aluminum structures, and any aluminum structural part, at an Elite Certified center.

Porsche

Porsche runs certified collision centers through its dealers. In the radar area a Porsche bumper must not be painted, wrapped or plastic-welded, and the calibration needed afterward varies by model, year and equipment. Porsche has banned wheel rim repair since September 2024.

At BMR Auto

Bolt-on parts, cosmetic paint outside the radar areas, and electronic checks. A Porsche wheel with rim damage gets replaced; see wheels and tires.

Lamborghini

The Aventador is built around a carbon monocoque, and the Huracán on a hybrid aluminum and carbon chassis. Lamborghini has run a carbon repair service since 2011 that sends factory technicians to its dealers or ships the car to Sant’Agata Bolognese; Lamborghini said in 2014 that cars with extensive internal structural damage are usually written off.

The claim, step by step

From the accident to the car back in your driveway.

  1. Keep the record. Photograph the damage, and keep the police report and the other driver’s insurance details. They help later, including for a diminished-value claim.
  2. Open a claim with your insurer, or with the other driver’s insurer if that driver caused the accident. Note the claim number.
  3. Send us the details. Photos, the VIN, your insurer and claim number, and whether the car can be driven. See what to send for an estimate.
  4. Intake. We photograph the car and scan the electronics before anything comes apart.
  5. Written estimate. We give you a written estimate before we start, unless you decline one on the disclosure form (s. 559.905).
  6. Teardown. If it shows damage the first estimate missed, we photograph it, send a supplement to your insurer and ask your approval before going past the limit Florida law sets (s. 559.909).
  7. Parts. Parts are ordered and listed by type on the estimate, and any aftermarket crash part is named as one (s. 501.33). Structural work and restricted parts go to the maker’s certified body shop.
  8. Repair and paint. The body and paint work follows the maker’s repair limits, including the radar zones on the bumpers.
  9. Electronics. Post-repair scan, module coding, and the airbag or safety battery terminal reset where the crash set them off.
  10. Final check. Road test and final photos.
  11. Delivery. The invoice lists labor and parts, marks any used, rebuilt or reconditioned part, states the guarantee and shows our state registration number (s. 559.911). You also get the scan reports, the photos and the parts list.

What to send for an estimate

  • Photos of the damage from several angles, and one of the whole car
  • The year, model and VIN
  • Your insurer and claim number, if you have one
  • Whether the car can be driven

Florida law

What Florida law says about your claim and your repair.

Florida law gives owners specific protections on insurance claims and on every repair. These are the ones that apply most often, with the statute for each. This is a plain summary, not legal advice.

Choosing a shop

What shop you may choose depends on your policy. If your insurer elects to repair and requires a particular shop, Florida law (s. 626.9743(3)) requires your car to be restored to its performance and appearance before the loss, at no added cost beyond your policy terms.

The other driver’s insurer

When the other driver’s liability and your damages are reasonably clear, that driver’s insurer may suggest repair options, but it may not recommend that you claim under your own policy just to avoid paying (s. 626.9743(2)).

Parts

Insurers may not require parts that are not at least equal in fit, appearance and performance (s. 626.9743(4)). Any estimate, ours or your insurer’s, that uses aftermarket crash parts must list each one with a printed notice (s. 501.33).

Estimates and invoices

You get a written estimate before BMR Auto starts, unless you decline one. BMR Auto will not exceed it by more than the small margin Florida law allows without your approval, will show you, or return, the replaced parts if you ask when you authorize the job, and lists every part and our registration number on the invoice (s. 559.905, s. 559.909, s. 559.911). Parts the shop must send back under a warranty or exchange (core) program can be inspected but are not returned.

Your insurer’s estimate

When your insurer settles a partial loss on a written estimate prepared by or for it, it must give you a copy, and any betterment or depreciation deduction must be itemized in dollars (s. 626.9743(6) and (7)).

Hidden damage

If teardown shows damage the first estimate missed, BMR Auto photographs it, sends a supplement to your insurer and asks your approval before continuing.

Diminished value

Your own policy generally does not pay for lost resale value. If another driver caused the accident, you can claim it against that driver’s insurer. BMR Auto can supply photos, parts lists and scan reports. Ask an attorney about deadlines.

Total loss

An insured car is a total loss when your insurer pays to replace it. A late-model car that was above the minimum value the statute sets before the damage cannot be rebuilt under Florida law if its repair estimate reaches 90 percent of its retail value (s. 319.30). If your own insurer totals the car and your policy pays actual cash value or a like-kind replacement, it must value the car by one of the methods in s. 626.9743(5), such as cash based on the cost of a comparable vehicle.

A late-model car here means seven model years old or newer. The 80 percent repair-cost test often quoted for total loss applies only to uninsured cars, and a car is not a total loss if the insurer and the owner agree to repair it (s. 319.30). Carbon and aluminum structural repairs push exotic estimates toward the 90 percent line quickly, so an accurate first estimate matters.

Paint

Paint rules the makers set.

Owners judge a body repair on the finish. These are the makers’ own rules for refinishing their cars, and the repair follows them.

Matte finishes

BMW matte paints such as Frozen should not be spot-repaired or blended, and cannot be polished. BMW’s ColorSystem guidance calls for color and matte clear edge to edge on the damaged panel. A whole side of the car may need refinishing for a match, and a BMW instructor recommends convection drying in a booth for the most consistent result.

Three repaints per panel

BMW and Mini cap a panel at three repaints in their film-thickness guidance. A paint-depth reading before repair shows earlier refinish and how close a panel is to that limit.

Rolls-Royce coachlines

Rolls-Royce hand-paints its coachlines at Goodwood as the last step of manufacture, and one line runs about six meters. A panel with a coachline needs the line restored after the repair, so tell us about it when you send the photos.

Parts and paperwork

The parts and the paperwork, in writing.

  • Every aftermarket crash part on an estimate is named, with a printed notice that it is not made by the car’s maker.
  • Every used, rebuilt or reconditioned part is marked as such on the invoice.
  • If you want original maker parts, say so when you approve the estimate and we will price them.
  • You get the photos, the scan reports and the parts list with the car.

For parts on their own, see parts. Owners outside South Florida can send modules to us by mail; see mail-in repair.

Fair prices

A fair price on an expensive repair.

A collision on a Rolls-Royce or a McLaren is expensive whatever happens, and BMR Auto keeps its own part of the bill fair. The shop has grown because it treats its clients and their cars with respect and charges what it would charge a friend or a family member who called after an accident. Many exotic car owners in South Florida trust us for that reason.

Prices depend on the car and the damage. Send the photos and the VIN, and we will quote the repair before any work starts.

What owners say after a repair at BMR Auto

The first review describes repairs after an accident. It does not name the car or the work done. The second is about a headlight repair. Most of our other reviews are about mechanical and electronic work, and you can read them by job on our reviews page.

“I recently had an accident and took my car for repairs. They did an amazing job, were great communicating everything that was going on with my car and overall I felt the service was done in a proper and fair way. KJ has great customer service!! I fully recommend 👌”

Questions about collision repair

Can I bring my car to BMR Auto if my insurer suggests another shop?

What you may choose depends on your policy, so read it or ask your insurer. When the other driver’s liability and your damages are reasonably clear, that driver’s insurer may suggest repair options, but it may not recommend that you claim under your own policy just to avoid paying. If your insurer elects to repair and requires a particular shop, Florida law requires the car to be restored to its performance and appearance before the loss.

Will you deal with the adjuster?

Yes. BMR Auto handles insurance claims. If teardown finds hidden damage, we photograph it, send a supplement to your insurer and ask your approval before going past what Florida law allows.

How much will the repair cost?

It depends on the car, the damage and the parts. Send BMR Auto photos from several angles and the VIN, and we will give you a written estimate before any work starts. If teardown shows more damage, you hear from us before the price changes.

Will you use original parts, and how will I know?

The estimate tells you. Any estimate that uses aftermarket crash parts must name each one with a printed notice, and the invoice must mark any used, rebuilt or reconditioned part. Your insurer may not require parts that are not at least equal in fit, appearance and performance. If you want original maker parts, tell us when you approve the estimate.

Will the paint match?

The repair follows the maker’s refinish rules. On BMW matte finishes such as Frozen, the whole panel is refinished edge to edge, because matte paint should not be blended and cannot be polished, and a whole side of the car may need refinishing for a match. BMW and Mini also cap each panel at three repaints.

How long will a repair take on an exotic?

It depends most on the parts. Structural carbon damage on a Lamborghini may mean factory technicians or a trip to Italy, and BMW approves each restricted structural part through a dealer. BMR Auto gives you a time once the parts are on order.

My BMW will not start after a minor accident. Why?

The safety battery terminal on the positive battery cable may have fired. BMW’s order is to find the cause, read and record the airbag faults, fix them, clear the fault memory, then replace the terminal. Call us and we will tell you whether to tow it in.

Another shop did the body work and now there are warning lights. Can you help?

Yes. Warning lights after body work usually come from a fault left in memory or a replaced module that was never coded to the car. BMR Auto scans the car with dealer-level diagnostic software, finds what the repair disturbed, and codes or programs the modules that need it. See diagnostics.

Can you document my repair for a diminished-value claim?

Yes. We can supply photos, the parts list and scan reports. Your own policy generally does not pay for lost resale value; if another driver caused the accident, you can claim it against that driver’s insurer. Ask an attorney about deadlines.

Is my car a total loss?

An insured car is a total loss when your insurer pays to replace it, and it is not one if you and your insurer agree to repair it. A car seven model years old or newer, above the minimum value the statute sets before the damage, cannot be rebuilt under Florida law if its repair estimate reaches 90 percent of its retail value (s. 319.30). The 80 percent figure often quoted applies only to uninsured cars.
