A fair price for peace of mind

Storing a Rolls-Royce, a Porsche or a McLaren for the season is about knowing it is looked after. We price storage fairly, the way we would for a friend or a family member who asked us to mind their car, and that respect for owners and their cars is how BMR Auto has grown.

What sitting does to a car

A parked car still needs looking after.

Modern luxury and exotic cars draw power even when they are switched off, and tires take a set under load. South Florida heat and humidity add to both. This is what owners should know before a car sits for weeks or months.

Batteries on BMW and Mini

Newer BMWs carry a lithium 12-volt battery with its own management system. When the battery is drained too far, that system shuts it off to protect the cells, and the car may not wake up. That kind of battery can often be brought back. See BMW lithium batteries.

Batteries on Rolls-Royce

A Rolls-Royce parked for months can drain its battery, and the Ghost and Wraith are known for it. A battery tender helps while the car is stored. See Rolls-Royce seasonal owners.

Batteries on exotics

An Ontario specialist reports that a McLaren 12C battery can go flat in 10 to 14 days and a 570S within two weeks, and that some McLaren modules need recoding after a full drain. It reports that a Ferrari 458 body control module drains the battery in about three weeks, and that about three months of storage can corrupt module memory so it needs a reset and recoding. See programming and coding.

Plug-in hybrid Ferraris

Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale says that storing a plug-in hybrid Ferrari longer than two weeks without the Ferrari battery conditioner voids the hybrid component warranty.

Tires

Tires that stand still under the car’s weight flatten slightly where they meet the ground. Continental says a car standing for a month or longer can develop semi-permanent flat spots, and that high temperatures and low pressure make them worse. Michelin says most flat spotting is not permanent and that more than 20 minutes at normal highway speeds relaxes most of it. Michelin recommends keeping tires at the pressure on the door placard and no higher. Continental suggests adding 0.2 bar before a long period of parking, without going above the maximum cold pressure for the tire. See wheels and tires.

Hydraulics and brakes

The same Ontario specialist reports that the front-axle lift pump seals on a Ferrari 458 can dry out on cars that sit, so the nose stops holding its height, and that McLaren 720S carbon ceramic brakes can need the pedal pumped after two to three weeks parked. See brakes and suspension.

Before, during and after

If the car stays in South Florida while you are away.

For seasonal owners, storage at the shop means the car can be serviced on the way in and checked on the way out.

Before you leave

If a service is due, it can be done before the car goes into storage, so the car does not sit for months on old oil. See maintenance.

While you are away

The battery stays on a maintainer. Tell us before you leave if you want work done while you are away, and we will call you with the quote.

Before you come back

Give us a few days’ notice and we can check the battery, set the tire pressures and scan for faults, so the car is ready when you land.

Pickup and delivery

Our concierge service can collect the car in an enclosed carrier and bring it back to your address. Concierge is quoted separately. See concierge.

Rolls-Royce owners will find model notes on the Rolls-Royce page. Plug-in hybrid and electric car owners should read hybrid and EV batteries first.

Hurricane season

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, a window the National Hurricane Center chose because it covers about 97 percent of Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes. The peak is around September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October.

Before you leave for the summer, ask your insurer how your policy covers the car while it is stored and in a named storm, and keep that policy in force.

A car that has stood in floodwater should not be started until it has been checked. Water in the engine or the electronics can turn a repair into a much larger one.

After a storm

BMR Auto can inspect a car that sat in high water, checking the flood signs FLHSMV lists and scanning the electronics. See inspection for a car you already own.

For storm damage to the body or paint, see collision and body. For warning lights after water exposure, see diagnostics.

Questions about car storage

How much does car storage cost?

It depends on the car and how long it stays. Call BMR Auto with the car and your dates, and we will quote it. Service and any checks you ask for are quoted separately.

Is the storage air-conditioned?

Yes. The storage is air-conditioned and secured, at our shop at 325 W Dixie Highway, Dania Beach.

Will you keep my battery charged?

Yes. The battery is kept on a maintainer while the car is stored. Many modern luxury and exotic cars can drain a battery in a few weeks of sitting, and some need modules recoded after a full drain, so this matters.

Do you start or drive the car while I am away?

We agree that with you before you leave, based on the car and how long it will sit. Michelin recommends regular operation and movement of a car to limit tire flat spotting, and Continental suggests adding a little pressure before a long period of parking.

What insurance covers my car while it is stored?

Keep your own policy in force while the car is stored, and ask your insurer how it covers a car kept at a repair shop, including in a named storm.

Can I get to my car while it is stored?

Yes, during shop hours, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Call ahead so the car is ready for you.

Can you service the car while it is in storage?

Yes. Service can be booked while the car is stored, so it is ready when you return. See maintenance.

Can you collect the car from my home and bring it back?

Yes. Our concierge service collects cars in an enclosed carrier and brings them back to the address you choose. It is quoted separately. See concierge.

I have a plug-in hybrid Ferrari. What do I need for storage?

Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale says storage beyond two weeks needs the Ferrari battery conditioner to keep the hybrid component warranty valid. Bring the conditioner with the car, and tell us when you book.
