What we do

Tire and wheel work at BMR Auto.

Tell us the car, the tire size and what you notice, a vibration, a warning light or a tire that keeps losing air, and we will tell you what the job is and quote it.

Balancing

A wheel out of balance shows as a vibration through the steering wheel or the seat, usually at highway speed. BMR Auto balances the wheels and checks them for damage while they are off the car.

Tire rotation

Rotation is possible only when the tire sizes and tread allow it. On a staggered car it is limited to side-to-side swaps, and only with non-directional tires. See rotation and staggered fitments.

Tire pressure sensors

A warning that will not clear is read with dealer-level diagnostic equipment, so we know whether a sensor has failed or needs to be relearned. See tire pressure warnings.

New tires

When your car needs tires, we will tell you which approved, marked tires fit it and quote the job. One BMW owner’s manual says to have tires mounted and balanced only by a service center or tire specialist, and to break new tires in for 200 miles (300 km).

Alignment

A car that pulls, or wears one edge of its tires, gets its suspension checked first. See alignment.

Tire checks in the maker’s schedule

BMW’s Vehicle Check includes the tires, and Mercedes-Benz Service A includes setting tire pressures and resetting the TPMS, as Mercedes-Benz of Orlando, a dealer, describes it. When your car is in for service, BMR Auto looks at the tread, the sidewalls and the date codes. See scheduled maintenance.

OE tire marks

The approval mark on your tire, by make.

Carmakers approve particular tires for their cars and mark them on the sidewall. These are the marks as Tire Rack lists them.

MakeMark on the sidewall
BMW and MiniA five-pointed star: *, *1, *11
PorscheN0, N1, N2 and so on, and model codes: NA0 and up for the 911, NB0 and up for the Boxster and Cayman, NC for the Cayenne, ND for the Panamera, NE for the Macan, NF for the Taycan
Mercedes-BenzMO, MO1, MO2, MO-S and others, with MOE for extended mobility tires
FerrariF, F01 to F04, and K1 to K3
McLarenMC, MC-C, MC1, MC2

BentleyB in a circle, B, B1, BC, BH, BL

Is the mark required?

A tire retailer explains that the BMW star is an approval mark, recommended by BMW and not a legal requirement. What must match is the size, and at least the original load index and speed rating. The same retailer notes that tires of different rolling circumference strain an xDrive system, so tires should be replaced as matched sets.

One make, one tread

One BMW owner’s manual recommends approved tires of a single tread design from one manufacturer, and advises against retreads. If your car wears a mix of brands today, we will point it out.

Tire age

How old are your tires?

A garaged exotic driven 2,000 miles a year reaches six years with tread to spare. In South Florida the heat makes that matter more.

Reading the DOT code

The last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall are the week and year the tire was made. 1116 means week 11 of 2016. The code may be on the inner sidewall only, so look on both sides.

When to replace an old tire

  • NHTSA sets no age limit for tires. It notes that some vehicle and tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires that are six to 10 years old, regardless of treadwear, and that tire aging is a greater concern in the southern Sun Belt states.
  • Ford, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz advise replacing tires 6 years after production, whatever the tread, Edmunds reports.
  • Continental and Michelin advise replacement no later than 10 years, with a yearly inspection after year 5, the same report says.
  • Edmunds also cites NHTSA research finding that tires age faster in warmer climates, and notes that sun and coastal conditions speed aging.

Low-mileage and stored cars

Read the date codes once a year on a car that sits. Past year 5, Continental and Michelin advise a yearly inspection, and Ford, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz advise new tires at 6 years however much tread is left. Bring the car in and we will read the codes and look at the sidewalls for cracking.

A pre-purchase inspection reads the date codes on every tire.

Rotation

Rotation and staggered fitments.

A staggered fitment uses different tire sizes front and rear, usually wider at the rear. Many Porsche 911s, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens and BMW M cars are set up this way; the tire placard on your car shows its sizes.

  • Front and rear tires of different sizes cannot swap places, so a staggered car cannot be rotated front to back.
  • Side-to-side swaps are possible only with non-directional tires.
  • On a car with the same size all round, rotation is possible within the limits of the tread pattern.
  • On a staggered car, the rear tires often wear out first, so plan to replace them as a pair.

Run-flats and punctures

Run-flat tires and punctures.

One BMW owner’s manual says to slow down and have the wheels and tires checked after any suspected tire damage, and recommends replacing a damaged tire rather than repairing it.

A run-flat tire can carry the car a limited distance after it loses pressure, at reduced speed, and the owner’s manual for your car gives those limits. After a run-flat has been driven flat, have it looked at before you trust it again. BMR Auto follows the maker’s guidance for your car when it decides between a repair and a new tire, and tells you which it is before any work.

Tire pressure warnings

When the tire pressure light stays on.

A tire pressure warning that stays on after a tire change can mean the sensors need to be relearned, or that one has failed. BMR Auto reads the system with dealer-level diagnostic equipment to find which, then relearns the sensors or replaces the one that failed.

One earlier review of the work of KJ, who owns BMR Auto, describes a BMW 335xi that came in with the tire pressure lights on among other warnings. KJ cleared them and programmed the cluster to work correctly.

Other warnings with it

When the tire pressure light comes with other warnings, start with diagnostics. Cluster and module work is on programming and coding.

Alignment

Wheel alignment.

A car that pulls to one side, a steering wheel that sits off center, or tires that wear on one edge all point to the alignment. Worn suspension parts throw an alignment out, so BMR Auto checks those first, and the alignment is set after the repair. Suspension work is on brakes and suspension.

Wheels

Damaged wheels, center-lock wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes.

Some wheels need more care than others. Tell us about these when you book.

Curb rash and bent wheels

Send us a photo of the wheel and tell us the car. A bent wheel can cause a vibration that balancing alone will not cure, so we check the wheel before a tire goes back on it. Porsche has prohibited rim repair since a September 2024 position statement, so a damaged Porsche wheel is replaced.

Center-lock wheels

Some Porsche GT and Turbo models, among other performance cars, use a single center nut tightened to a torque the maker sets. Tell us when you book that your car has them.

Carbon-ceramic brakes

On a car with carbon-ceramic brakes, the wheels come off with care, because the discs are brittle and chip if knocked, a Ferrari dealer warns. Brake work is on brakes and suspension.

Quotes

How BMR Auto prices wheel and tire work.

Tires and wheels for a Rolls-Royce or a Lamborghini already cost plenty. BMR Auto quotes the work on your car before you book and charges for what was done, at a price we would be comfortable giving a friend. That is the way the shop has always worked, and it is a large part of why owners trust us with their cars.

JobHow it is quoted
Tire rotationPer car, where the sizes allow it
Wheel balancingPer wheel, by wheel size
Tire pressure warning diagnosisPer car
Tire pressure sensor relearn or replacementPer car or per sensor, by make

Send the year, model and tire size, and we will quote your car. Florida law requires the shop to prepare a written estimate before any diagnostic work or repair on all but the smallest jobs, unless you waive it in writing; see your rights under Florida law.

Questions from owners

Do I need star-marked tires on my BMW?

The star is BMW’s approval mark. A tire retailer explains that BMW recommends star tires but they are not a legal requirement, and that what must match is the size, with a load index and speed rating at least equal to the original. Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and the exotic makers have their own marks; see the table of marks.

How do I tell how old my tires are?

Read the last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall. 1116 means week 11 of 2016. Check both sides, because the code may be on the inner sidewall only.

My tires still have tread. Do they need replacing?

Possibly. Ford, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz advise replacing tires 6 years after production whatever the tread, and Continental and Michelin no later than 10 years. Heat ages tires faster, so on a car that sits in South Florida, read the date codes every year.

Can you rotate the tires on my 911, Ferrari or M car?

Not front to back if the car has a staggered fitment, with wider tires at the rear. Side-to-side swaps work only with non-directional tires.

Can a run-flat be repaired?

One BMW owner’s manual recommends replacing a damaged tire rather than repairing it. BMR Auto follows the maker’s guidance for your car and tells you which it will be before any work.

My tire pressure light came on after a tire change. Can you fix it?

Yes. BMR Auto reads the system to see whether the sensors need to be relearned or one has failed, then fixes it. See tire pressure warnings.

My car pulls to one side. Is it the alignment?

It can be, and it can also be a worn suspension part, which throws the alignment out. BMR Auto checks the suspension first, so the alignment is set on parts that are sound. See alignment.

Can you repair curb rash or a bent wheel?

Send us a photo of the wheel and tell us the car. We will tell you what can be done and quote it before you book.

Can you work on center-lock wheels or a car with carbon-ceramic brakes?

Tell us when you book. Center-lock wheels are tightened to the torque the maker sets, and on carbon-ceramic cars the wheels come off with care, because the discs chip if knocked.

Send us the car, the tire size and the date code.
