What a battery job costs
It depends on the car, the battery and what caused the failure, so we quote each job after a test. Call BMR Auto or send the year, model and the warning on the dash, and we will tell you the cost before any work starts.
BMW 12-volt lithium batteries
A drained BMW lithium battery is usually locked, not dead.
Many newer BMWs, including G-series cars such as the M4, carry a 12-volt lithium battery with its own management system. When the battery is drained too far, that system switches the battery off to protect the cells, and the car will not wake up. EV Clinic, a European battery specialist, says these batteries mostly fail from that protection lock rather than from damaged cells. That is why so many of them can be brought back.
What owners see
- Zero volts at the battery terminals
- An “Aged auxiliary battery” message, or auxiliary battery faults that come and go
- A car that will not wake up or unlock normally
- A dealer quote for a new battery
How BMR Auto handles it
- Find the cause first. A Mitchell 1 bulletin for G01 through G42 models says a sleep-mode fault can drain the battery completely, and the fix is a software update to the transmission control module. A new or revived battery would drain again, so we check for drains and software faults before anything else. See programming and coding.
- Test the battery. We test the cells and the battery’s management system to see whether it can be recovered.
- Recover it, or tell you it cannot be saved. We clear the protection lock, balance and retest the cells. A battery with damaged cells, water inside, heat damage or heavy corrosion is replaced.
- Refit, register and check. The battery goes back in, the car’s battery faults are cleared, the battery is registered to the car and the charging system is checked.
Revive or replace
A revived battery costs a fraction of a new one and keeps the battery the car was built with. When a battery cannot be saved, we fit the right replacement, register it and code the car if the type changed.
“KJ at BMR was able to completely revive a dead BMW lipo battery in less than 1 business day for a fraction of the price of what a new battery would cost.”

Mercedes-Benz 48-volt EQ Boost
Mercedes 48-volt batteries: check the recalls, then the battery.
Mercedes-Benz uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system on the M256 inline-six and other engines. On these cars the integrated starter-generator starts the engine, so a failed 48-volt battery can leave the car unable to start. Several recalls and campaigns cover the system, and they are free at a Mercedes-Benz dealer, so we check them before anyone pays for a repair.
Recall 24V-207
On 2019 to 2024 GLE and GLS models (167 platform), including the AMG models and the Maybach GLS 600, the 48-volt ground connection under the front passenger seat may be loose. Electrical resistance can build up at the connection, which creates a fire risk.
Recall 19V-605
On 3,257 cars, the 2019 CLS 450 and CLS 450 4MATIC, the power wire to the electric coolant pump could rub against the engine fan and chafe. That risks engine overheating and a shutdown of the 48-volt system. The battery itself is not the defect.
Service bulletin 2025070002
On 2019 to 2021 CLS, E-Class, GLE, GLS and AMG GT cars, the 48-volt battery control unit software may not match the current specification. In rare cases the check-engine light may not come on when it should.
Emissions recall 2022100005
On about 62,629 2019 to 2022 E-Class, CLS, GLE, GLS, S-Class and AMG GT cars, the permanent OBD fault memory of the 48-volt starter-generator control unit may not activate. The remedy is a software update to that control unit at an authorized dealer, with no parts replaced.
What owners report
Owners on MBWorld describe no-starts, repeat failures and cars waiting months for a battery or harness. One owner advised others to have the fault code checked at an independent shop before buying a battery, which is the right order.
What BMR Auto does
We read the 48-volt system’s faults, check the ground connection, the wiring and the battery management software, and test the battery. When the battery itself has failed, we repair the 48-volt lithium battery instead of replacing it, in the shop or by mail. Open recalls go to the dealer, where they are free, and we tell you so. The 48-volt battery may also still be under the factory or emissions warranty, so we check your coverage before you pay for anything.
Hybrid and EV high voltage
Hybrid and electric cars: the high-voltage system and everything around it.
Plug-in hybrids and electric cars carry a traction battery that runs at hundreds of volts, with its own cooling, charging and control electronics. BMR Auto does high-voltage battery work on these cars and services the 12-volt side that causes many hybrid no-starts. When a battery is still covered by the maker’s warranty or a recall, that work is free at the dealer, and we tell you so before any work starts.
BMW plug-in hybrids and the i3
BMW’s plug-in hybrids pair an engine with a high-voltage battery, and the i3 is electric, with an optional range-extender engine. Hybrid warnings on these cars often start with a 12-volt problem, a charging fault or a cooling fault rather than the traction battery itself.
At BMR Auto
Scans with dealer-level BMW software, hybrid warning diagnosis, high-voltage system checks, 12-volt battery and charging faults, battery registration and coding, and routine service.
Free at the dealer
High-voltage battery work still covered by BMW’s battery warranty or a recall.
Porsche Taycan
The Taycan is Porsche’s electric sports car. Taycan owners report that a dealer replaces high-voltage battery modules only after Porsche approves the job, and module faults covered by recall are fixed by module replacement at the dealer. Porsche has also offered lithium 12-volt batteries since 2010.
At BMR Auto
Fault scans, high-voltage system checks, the 12-volt lithium battery and its charging, and routine service.
Free at the dealer
Every recall on the high-voltage battery, and module replacement under Porsche’s battery warranty.
Ferrari SF90 Stradale
Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale says every plug-in hybrid Ferrari has a 5-year warranty on the battery, battery management system, inverter and electric motors, with paid extensions that can run to year 16 and include a new battery at years 8 and 16 for cars kept enrolled. For storage beyond two weeks, the dealer says to use the Ferrari Battery Conditioner to keep the hybrid warranty valid.
At BMR Auto
Routine mechanical work, fault scans, high-voltage system checks and 12-volt battery work. Ferrari’s dealer says independents are often fine for routine mechanical work.
Free at the dealer
Work that keeps the car inside Ferrari’s hybrid warranty programs.
Lamborghini Revuelto
The Revuelto is Lamborghini’s plug-in hybrid, pairing a naturally aspirated V12 with three electric motors. Lamborghini gives its hybrids an eight-year warranty on the high-voltage battery.
At BMR Auto
Fault scans, high-voltage system checks, 12-volt battery work and routine service.
Free at the dealer
Anything under Lamborghini’s new-car or hybrid warranty.
Other hybrids and electric cars follow the same approach. On the McLaren Artura, reading the battery’s state of health needs a McLaren interface, and a deep discharge can leave the car unable to reverse. The Rolls-Royce Spectre is fully electric. Call us with the car and the warning, and we will tell you what we will do here and what is free at the dealer.
Safety
High-voltage work is done by the book.
A traction battery holds enough energy to injure or kill, and it stays live after the car is switched off. At BMR Auto, high-voltage work starts with the system shut down and confirmed dead following the maker’s procedure, with insulated tools and protective equipment, and the car marked so nobody touches it while it is open. Lithium batteries are tested, charged and stored on equipment made for lithium.
That care is the same care we give every car in the shop: the way we would want a friend’s or a family member’s car handled.
For owners
- Do not open or probe a hybrid or EV battery, or the orange high-voltage cables.
- Charge a lithium 12-volt battery only with a charger made for lithium. BMW owners warn against using a charger meant for AGM batteries.
- Do not ship a lithium battery with a cracked case, corrosion or fire damage.
- Ship a battery padded, tracked and insured. See mail-in repair.
Registration and coding
A new battery has to be registered to the car.
BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars manage charging around the battery they believe is fitted. Registering a new battery tells the car to charge it as a new battery. When the replacement is a different type or capacity, the car also has to be coded to match, or it will charge the battery wrongly and shorten its life.
Registration
We register replacement batteries on BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce with dealer-level BMW software, and on other makes with the maker’s procedure.
Coding
When the battery type or capacity changes, we code the car to the new battery. Coding work is covered on the programming and coding page.
Software that drains batteries
On some G-series BMWs the battery drain is a software fault, fixed by updating the transmission control module. That update comes before any new battery.
Faults after a flat battery
Low voltage can corrupt module memory. Footwell module (FRM) failure on older BMWs and Minis often follows a dead battery, and FRM repair is the job our Google reviews mention most. See module repair and diagnostics.

Questions about lithium, hybrid and EV batteries
My BMW says “Aged auxiliary battery” or the battery reads zero volts. Can it be saved?
Often it can. Most of these lithium batteries have switched themselves off after a deep discharge. We test the cells and the management system first. If the cells are healthy we revive the battery; if they are damaged, wet, heat-affected or badly corroded, we replace it.
Why did my battery die in the first place?
Something drained it. On some G-series BMWs a sleep-mode fault drains the battery fully, and the fix is a software update to the transmission control module. A module that will not go to sleep, an aftermarket accessory or a car left parked for weeks can do the same. We find the cause before reviving or replacing the battery, or it will happen again.
How much does it cost to revive a BMW lithium battery?
It depends on the battery and what drained it, so we quote after a test. Reviving a battery usually costs a fraction of a new one. Call BMR Auto with the year and model for a quote.
My Mercedes will not start and shows a 48-volt warning. Is it the battery?
It may be. On the 48-volt cars the starter-generator starts the engine, so a 48-volt fault can mean no start. Check for open recalls first: recall 24V-207 covers a 48-volt ground that may be loose on 2019 to 2024 GLE and GLS models. We read the faults, check the wiring and test the battery. When the battery has failed, we can usually repair it instead of replacing it.
Do you work on hybrid and electric cars?
Yes. We do high-voltage battery work on hybrid and electric cars, and we diagnose and service the 12-volt battery, the charging side and the rest of the car. Work still covered by the maker’s battery warranty or a recall is free at the dealer, and we will tell you when that applies.
Is it safe to have high-voltage work done at an independent shop?
At a shop that follows the maker’s procedure, yes. At BMR Auto the high-voltage system is shut down and confirmed dead before work starts, with insulated tools and protective equipment.
Do I need coding after replacing my battery?
The new battery has to be registered so the car charges it correctly. If the new battery is a different type or capacity, the car also needs coding. We do both on BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce.
I store my Ferrari SF90 for weeks at a time. What do I need?
Ferrari’s Fort Lauderdale dealer says hybrid storage beyond two weeks needs the Ferrari battery conditioner to keep the hybrid component warranty valid. Use the car’s long-parking or storage mode when it has one. We also offer car storage with battery care.
Can I mail my battery in?
Yes. Send a mail-in request first, then pack it padded, tracked and insured, and do not ship a battery with a cracked case, corrosion or fire damage. See mail-in repair.
Tell us the car, the battery warning and how long it sat.
