Factory systems
Start with what the car left the factory with.
The upgrade that makes sense depends on the system already in the car. These are the factory systems on the makes we see most.
BMW
Up to three tiers, depending on the model: the base system, Harman Kardon and Bowers and Wilkins. A base-system car can be upgraded with factory-look speakers and amplifiers while keeping the iDrive controls, and the car is coded to the new hardware. See BMW service.
Rolls-Royce
Rolls-Royce fits its own Bespoke Audio system. The first-generation Ghost, the Wraith and the Dawn run on BMW F-series electronics, so their audio modules are diagnosed and coded much like a BMW’s. See Rolls-Royce service.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes offers Burmester sound. Owners of the S-Class (W222) and the GLB look for Burmester retrofits on cars built without it. See Mercedes-Benz service.
Porsche
A used Bose amplifier fitted to a Porsche 991 can come up in component protection, locked to its original car, and needs Porsche’s factory system to release it. Ask before you buy one. See Porsche service.
Upgrades and retrofits
Better sound, with nothing that looks added.
An audio retrofit adds hardware the car did not leave the factory with, then codes the car to recognize it, so the new parts work with the factory controls. Retrofits and coding are a core part of what BMR Auto does on BMW and Rolls-Royce.
- Listen and check. We note the factory system, the build options on the VIN and what you want more of.
- Choose the parts. Speakers and amplifiers that fit the factory locations, chosen so the grilles and trim look as they did.
- Install. Amplifiers go out of sight, and the factory wiring is kept where possible.
- Code and test. We code the car to the new hardware, then check every speaker, the controls and the fault memory.
Start with the VIN
The VIN tells us which audio system and which amplifier the car was built with. That decides whether an upgrade needs only speakers, a new amplifier or coding as well, and it is the first thing we ask for.
Coding and other retrofits
The same coding work covers other factory options added after the car was built. See programming and coding.
Audio repair
When the radio, a speaker or the whole system goes quiet.
We find audio faults with a full module scan before replacing anything. Audio faults are often electrical, so the fix may be a module, a connection or software. See diagnostics.
Radio or head unit dead
In an earlier review of the work of KJ, who owns BMR Auto, one BMW X5 owner says dealers wanted to charge two hours just to find the fault, and that the shop took care of the radio “very fast and inexpensive.” A scan shows whether the head unit, an amplifier or the connection between them has failed.
The whole system goes dark
On many BMW models from the 2000s and early 2010s, the audio and infotainment modules share a fiber-optic ring. One failed module can take the screen and the sound down together, so the scan has to find which module broke the ring.
No sound after a flat battery
Low voltage can corrupt module memory on BMWs and Minis. If an audio module lost its software, it can often be programmed again. See module repair.
Water in an amplifier
Amplifiers mounted in the trunk or under a seat can be damaged by water from a leaking seal or a blocked drain. The leak has to be found and fixed, or the new amplifier fails the same way.
Used amplifier will not work
On Porsche, a used Bose amplifier can come up locked to its original car. On BMW, a used module may need coding to your car.
What it costs
Audio work quoted for your car.
Prices depend on the car, the system it was built with and the parts. Call or send the VIN and tell us what you want, and BMR Auto will quote the job before we start.
| Job | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Audio fault diagnosis | A module scan and checks on the wiring and connections, before any part is replaced |
| Radio or head unit repair | Repair, replacement or reprogramming of the unit that failed |
| Speaker upgrade, factory look | Speakers in the factory locations, with the factory grilles and controls |
| Upgrade with an amplifier | An amplifier out of sight, the speakers to match and coding to the new hardware |
| Coding after an audio retrofit | Coding the car so it recognizes the new hardware and clears the faults |
Florida law requires the shop to prepare a written estimate before any diagnostic work or repair on all but the smallest jobs, unless you waive it in writing; see your rights under Florida law.
A fair price on a fine car
A BMW or a Rolls-Royce with a quiet speaker deserves a proper fix, and the owner deserves a fair price for it. BMR Auto has grown by treating clients and their cars with respect, and by charging what we would charge a friend or a family member. We find the fault first, so you pay for the part that failed and nothing else.
The one audio review so far: a radio repair
One Google review describes audio work, a radio repair on a BMW X5. It is an earlier review of KJ’s work, written before BMR Auto opened in 2022. Read the rest by job on our reviews page.
“Went to these guys and they took care of my radio very fast and inexpensive.”

Questions about sound systems
Can you upgrade the base stereo in my BMW without changing how it looks?
Yes. We fit factory-look speakers and an amplifier, keep the iDrive controls and code the car to the new hardware. Send the VIN so we can see which system the car was built with.
Can my BMW be upgraded to Harman Kardon or Bowers and Wilkins?
It depends on the model and on what the car was built with. The VIN shows the factory system and the wiring the car has. Send it, and BMR Auto will tell you what your car can take and quote it.
Do you work on Rolls-Royce audio?
Yes. The first-generation Ghost, the Wraith and the Dawn run on BMW F-series electronics, so their audio faults are diagnosed and coded much like a BMW’s. Tell us the model and what the system is doing.
Why does a retrofit need coding?
A retrofit adds hardware the car did not leave the factory with. The car has to be coded to recognize it, or the new parts and the factory controls may not work together.
My radio stopped working. Can you fix it?
Yes. We scan the audio modules, find the fault and repair or replace what failed. In an earlier review of KJ’s work, one X5 owner wrote that the shop took care of the radio “very fast and inexpensive.”
The screen and the sound both went dark. What failed?
On many older BMWs, the audio and infotainment modules share a fiber-optic ring, so one failed module can take both down. A scan finds the module that broke the ring.
I bought a used amplifier online. Will it work?
It depends on the make. On Porsche, a used Bose amplifier can come up locked to its original car. On BMW, a used module may need coding to your car. Ask us before you buy.
How much does an upgrade cost?
It depends on the car, the system it was built with and the parts you choose. Call BMR Auto or send the VIN with what you want, and we will quote the job before any work starts.
Tell us the car and what you want from the sound.
