Models and engines
Aston Martin engines, family by family.
The VH-platform cars use V8 and V12 engines from the Ford years, and the cars since the DB11 use Aston Martin’s twin-turbo V12 or the Mercedes-AMG V8. The engine and the gearbox decide most of what a job involves.
V8 Vantage
From the 2006 model year to 2017
The 4.3-liter V8, then the 4.7-liter from the 2009 model year, based loosely on Jaguar’s AJ-V8, dry sump and assembled by hand in Cologne. A six-speed manual, the six-speed Sportshift automated manual, or the seven-speed Sportshift II on the V8 Vantage S, all at the rear axle.
VH V12 cars
DB9 2004 to 2016, DBS 2007 to 2012, Rapide 2010 to 2020, Vanquish 2012 to 2018, V12 Vantage
The 5.9-liter V12. The DB9 uses a ZF six-speed Touchtronic automatic or a Graziano six-speed manual at the rear, the later Rapide and Vanquish the eight-speed Touchtronic III, and the V12 Vantage S the Sportshift III.

The Mercedes-AMG cars
The V8 Aston Martins share their engine with Mercedes-AMG.
In December 2013 Aston Martin agreed with Daimler to use Mercedes-AMG engines and electrical systems. The DB11 was the first Aston Martin with Mercedes-Benz electronics for its entertainment, navigation and other systems, the Vantage launched in 2018 with the Mercedes COMAND system, and the DBX borrows its powertrain and infotainment from Mercedes-Benz. From the 2025 model year the Vantage moved to Aston Martin’s own infotainment.

Sportshift clutch
Aston Martin’s service bulletin SB-07-0315V4, of June 2017, says Sportshift clutches on the V8 Vantage and V8 Vantage S were sometimes replaced unnecessarily, and that the clutch learn must be run regularly or the clutch drifts out of adjustment. The procedure it gives is a fault and software check, a clutch learn and, if the clutch readings are out of range, a hydraulic bleed, done with Aston Martin’s AMDS. Call us before you pay for a new clutch.
Diagnostics
Aston Martin dealers use AMDS on the VH cars and AMDS 2.0 on the DB11 and later. We scan the car and test the fault before we recommend a part.
Batteries
Aston Martin’s service policy letter SPL-14-1038 tells DB11, 2019 Vantage and DBS Superleggera owners to connect an AGM battery conditioner when the car sits unused for more than two weeks. On affected DB11 V12 cars, service action SA-03-0290 updated the engine software so the headlamps switch off in a stop/start cycle instead of draining the battery.
Ignition and engine
Octane names failed ignition coil packs as one of the more common issues on the DB9 V12, and Auto Express notes there is one coil per cylinder, each replaceable on its own.
Suspension
PistonHeads reports recalls on the DB9’s lower suspension arm cam bolt and front subframe bolt torque. We check your VIN for open US recalls, which a dealer repairs free.
Maintenance and oil changes
Oil to the specification for your exact engine, fluids, filters and inspections. Send the model, the engine and the VIN, and we quote the service due.
Programming and coding
