Fair prices
Mercedes-Benz and AMG work, priced as we would price it for a friend.
An S-Class or an AMG GT costs real money to run, and one wrong diagnosis on a 48-volt car can mean paying for a battery you did not need. At BMR Auto you pay a fair price for the right repair. This is how BMR Auto earned the trust of so many owners of exotic and high-end cars: KJ, who owns the shop, treats each client and each car with respect, and he sets the price with the honor he would show a friend or a family member who handed him the keys. The shop has grown on that, and a Mercedes owner gets the same treatment here as the owner of an exotic.
Before any work begins you get a quote for your car. Send the VIN and tell us the fault. Florida law also requires a repair shop to offer you a written estimate before work begins on all but the smallest jobs, unless you waive it in writing; see your rights under Florida law.
“I came to fix my Mercedes. They were very professional and quick. I am beyond satisfied with the work”

Engines and models
The engine under your Mercedes decides the work.
The Mercedes range is wide, so we group it by engine. The engine family tells you which faults to watch for, and the model year tells you which key and coding rules apply.
M256 inline-six and the 48-volt cars
48-volt E-Class, CLS, GLE, GLS, S-Class and AMG GT 4-door models from the 2019 model year
The M256 is a 3.0-liter inline-six with the 48-volt EQ Boost system, and the AMG 53 models use a 429 hp version. Mercedes' emissions campaign 2022100005 covers 48-volt cars from the 2019 to 2022 E-Class, CLS, GLE, GLS, S-Class and AMG GT, and recall 24V-207 reaches 2024 GLE models. 48-volt battery work
M272 V6
About 2004 to 2011: C, E, CLK, CLS, SLK, S, SL, R, ML and GLK models
A V6 with two well-known faults: balance shaft sprocket wear and intake manifold runner flaps. M272 engine work
AMG V8 cars
AMG V8 cars such as the SLS AMG, the AMG GT and the G 63
The 5.5-liter M157 V8 has a documented fault list, in the engine section below. The SLS AMG and the AMG GT on this page were photographed in our shop. AMG engine work
Maybach and G-Class
Maybach S-Class, Maybach GLS 600 and the G-Class
The Maybach S-Class and GLS 600 share their systems with the S-Class and GLS, so the Mercedes coding and key rules on this page apply to them. Call us first with a Maybach and the VIN.

The EQS is fully electric. Its high-voltage battery is a different system from the 48-volt battery on the EQ Boost cars. For the other makes we work on, see every brand.
48-volt EQ Boost batteries
A 48-volt fault: check the recalls, then the battery.
BMR Auto already repairs these batteries. It is also the Mercedes job where owners are most confused, because a recall, a software campaign and a failed battery can look the same from the driver's seat.
What owners report
A 2020 GLS 580 owner on MBWorld reported repeated no-starts at about 31,000 miles, four different explanations from the dealer and about ten days at the dealer. Another owner advised others to have the fault code checked at an independent shop before buying a new battery.
The order we suggest
- Check open recalls and campaigns by VIN. They are repaired free at a Mercedes-Benz dealer.
- Check whether the factory or emissions warranty still covers the 48-volt battery.
- Then have the battery tested and repaired. We read the 48-volt faults, check the ground connection and the battery management software, and test the battery before we recommend a repair or a replacement.
The 48-volt repair at BMR Auto
- We repair the 48-volt lithium battery itself, so you keep the original battery.
- Bring the car to the shop, or send the battery by mail through our mail-in service.
- Batteries with a broken casing, corrosion or fire damage are not accepted.
- Call BMR Auto with the VIN for a quote on your car.

Recalls and campaigns on the 48-volt cars
| Number | Cars | What it is | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recall 24V-207 | 2019 to 2024 GLE and GLS, including AMG models and the Maybach GLS 600 (167 platform) | The 48-volt ground connection under the front passenger seat may be loose, with a fire risk | Have the dealer check and correct it. |
| Recall 19V-605 | 2019 CLS 450, including 4MATIC | The electric coolant pump power line may contact the engine fan and chafe, with a risk of overheating and the 48-volt system shutting down | Have the dealer repair it. |
| Emissions campaign 2022100005 | 2019 to 2022 E-Class, CLS, GLE, GLS, S-Class and AMG GT | The starter-generator control unit's permanent fault memory may not activate; the fix is a software update, with no parts | Have the dealer do the update. |
| Service bulletin 2025070002 | 2019 to 2021 CLS, E-Class, GLE, GLS and AMG GT | The 48-volt battery control unit software may not match the current specification; in rare cases the check-engine light may not come on | Ask the dealer about it. |
| Campaign 2025050001 (reported by owners) | 2019 to 2022 GLS, per owners | A 48-volt battery management software update; owners report the cooling fan running 10 to 20 minutes after shutdown afterward | Check your VIN. |
Recall numbers 24V-207 and 19V-605 are NHTSA campaign numbers; the others are Mercedes-Benz campaign and bulletin numbers. Recall repairs are free at a Mercedes-Benz dealer, and Mercedes covered bulletin 2025070002 under warranty. Send us your VIN and we check it for open recalls.
Diagnostics, coding and keys
What Mercedes lets an independent shop do.
Mercedes sells its factory software to independent shops, and keeps a few jobs on its own servers or at the dealer. We tell you on the first call which side of that line your job sits.
Diagnostics
We diagnose Mercedes cars with dealer-level diagnostic software and read every module before we recommend a repair. Newer platforms such as the current S-Class (223) have a security gateway, and independent access to it runs through the AutoAuth registration service.
Programming and coding
Variant coding, such as comfort functions or display language, is done locally. SCN coding is a value issued by Mercedes' servers and tied to the VIN; it is needed after replacing the ignition switch, DAS, SBC, ESP, front or rear SAM, or an airbag unit, and without it the car may not start or may run in limp mode.
Keys
On FBS3 cars, most models through about 2014, we make and program keys. On FBS4 cars, most models from about 2015, the key is built by Mercedes for your VIN and comes through a dealer; option code 803 on the car's data card marks FBS4.
Ignition switch (DAS4)
Programming the DAS4 electronic ignition switch and its keys is restricted to trained dealer staff. If your car needs that, we tell you before you pay us anything.
AMG and Maybach cars follow the same coding and key rules as the rest of the Mercedes range.
Engine work and AMG
The Mercedes engine faults owners ask about.
These are the faults Mercedes specialists and parts suppliers document most on these engines. We read the codes and check the engine before we quote the repair.
M272 balance shaft
Wear on the balance shaft sprocket, worst on 2005 to 2007 engines, sets codes P0016 and P0017 (Mercedes 1200 and 1208) and shows as a rattle, misfires or a rough idle. The chain can skip on this interference engine, and the repair means taking the engine out. The class action no longer covers any car.
M272 intake runner flaps
The intake manifold runner flaps fail around 80,000 to 100,000 miles and set code P2004. The fix is the redesigned manifold.
M256 inline-six
Plastic thermostat housings and pipe fittings crack, and the electric auxiliary compressor can fail, which shows as lag at low engine speed. Timing chain wear on the M256 is reported, but there is not yet enough data to call it a pattern.
AMG M157 V8
Cam adjuster wear, cracked turbo oil lines, spark plugs and coils, cylinder scoring and coolant tank leaks. A rattle at cold start is the first sign of worn cam adjusters.
Maintenance
Mercedes splits scheduled maintenance into A and B services, and the car tells you which one is due. Send us the VIN and the service on the dash, and we quote it.

Engines at a glance
- M272 V6, about 2004 to 2011
- M157 5.5-liter AMG V8
- M256 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt EQ Boost, 429 hp in AMG 53 models
Every other job
Suspension, bodywork, inspections and parts.
Send us the VIN and the job, and we tell you what we can do and quote it.
Brakes and suspension
Brake service and suspension repair on Mercedes cars, air suspension included. Tell us how the car sits after it has been parked and which warning is on.
Wheels and tires
Tires, balancing and alignment. Uneven wear on a heavy SUV such as the GLS or the G-Class often points to alignment or suspension, so we check both.
Air conditioning
We diagnose and repair Mercedes air conditioning and find the leak or the failed part before the system is recharged.
Headlights
We repair Mercedes headlights. Tell us the model and what the light is doing, and we quote it.
Collision and body
Mercedes sets four repair levels. Level 3 and 3+ welded work needs Mercedes aluminum training, only dealer-owned Elite Certified centers may buy aluminum structural parts, and extruded aluminum members may not be straightened. Structural work on these cars goes to that network.
Pre-purchase inspection
On an M157 AMG we listen at cold start for the cam adjusters, and run a compression and leak-down test if the engine uses more than about a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. On a 48-volt car we check the recall and campaign status.
Parts
A used SAM, ESP or ignition module needs SCN coding before it works in your car. Ask us before you buy a used module online.
Hybrid and electric cars
The 48-volt cars are covered above. Call us first with an EQS or another fully electric Mercedes.
What goes to the dealer
When the Mercedes-Benz dealer is the right place.
When a job belongs at the dealer, we say so on the first call, so you do not pay us to find out.
- Recalls and the emissions campaign, which a Mercedes-Benz dealer does free, including recall 24V-207 and emissions campaign 2022100005. Ask the dealer about the 48-volt battery software bulletins too.
- Repairs covered by the factory or emissions warranty. Check whether your 48-volt battery is still covered before you pay for a repair.
- FBS4 keys, which Mercedes builds for your VIN and delivers to a dealer, and DAS4 ignition switch programming.
- SCN coding that needs Mercedes' own servers, when we cannot do it for your car.
- Structural aluminum body repair, which Mercedes limits to its certified network.
In general, servicing at an independent shop does not void your warranty. A maker may not require a branded part or service as a condition of the warranty unless that part or service is free, and the FTC says a company cannot deny coverage only because you used an independent shop or another company's parts. It can deny a claim for damage the outside part or work caused.

Questions from Mercedes-Benz owners
Can you repair my 48-volt battery instead of replacing it?
Yes, in many cases. We repair the 48-volt lithium battery itself, in the shop or by mail. Check open recalls and your warranty first, because those repairs are free at the dealer. Call BMR Auto with the VIN for a quote on your car.
Is my 48-volt fault a recall?
It may be. Recall 24V-207 covers a 48-volt ground under the front passenger seat on 2019 to 2024 GLE and GLS models. Emissions campaign 2022100005 is a software fix on 2019 to 2022 cars, and bulletin 2025070002 is a software fix on 2019 to 2021 cars. A dealer checks your VIN, and recall and emissions campaign work is free.
Why does my fan run after I shut the car off?
Owners of 2019 to 2022 GLS models report the cooling fan running 10 to 20 minutes after shutdown following a 48-volt battery management software update. Owners report it; we have not seen a Mercedes document that explains it.
My GLS will not start. Is it the 48-volt battery?
It can be. On these cars the 48-volt starter-generator starts the engine, so a failed 48-volt battery means no start. A ground fault or software can cause the same symptom, so we test the system before we recommend a battery.
Can you program a Mercedes key if I have one working key?
On FBS3 cars, most models through about 2014, yes. On FBS4 cars, most models from about 2015, Mercedes builds the key for your VIN, so even with a working key it comes through a dealer. See Mercedes keys.
Do you service AMG engines?
Yes. The SLS AMG and the AMG GT on this page were photographed in our shop. On the M157 V8 the known faults are cam adjuster wear, cracked turbo oil lines, plugs and coils, cylinder scoring and coolant tank leaks.
Will a used module from eBay work in my car?
Often not without coding. A used SAM, ESP, ignition switch or airbag module needs SCN coding from Mercedes' servers before it works, and without it the car may not start or may run in limp mode. Ask us before you buy.
My M272 rattles at start-up. Is it the balance shaft?
It may be. Balance shaft sprocket wear is worst on 2005 to 2007 engines and sets codes P0016 and P0017. We read the codes and the cam timing before we quote.
Will servicing my Mercedes at an independent shop void the warranty?
Usually not. Under federal law a maker may not require a branded part or service as a condition of the warranty unless that part or service is free, and the FTC says a company cannot deny coverage only because the car was serviced at an independent shop or fitted with another company's parts. It can deny a claim for damage the outside work caused. Keep the written invoice we give you for every job.
