How a BMR Auto diagnostic works
A code tells us where to look. The diagnosis finds the part.
Reading a fault code takes a minute. Finding out why the code is there takes testing, and that testing is the diagnostic.
- We listen first. When did it start, what does the car do, what has already been tried.
- We confirm the complaint. We see the warning or feel the fault ourselves, on a road test where it is safe to do so.
- We scan every module with dealer-level diagnostic software and read freeze-frame and live data, along with the stored codes.
- We test the suspect circuit or part and check for known issues and service bulletins on that model.
- You get photos by text of what we found, with a plain explanation.
- You get a written estimate, and nothing is repaired until you approve it.
- We repair, code and verify. Replaced modules are coded to the car and we drive it again before you collect it.
What a diagnostic costs
You know the cost before we start.
The cost of a diagnostic depends on the car and the fault. A warning light on a BMW and an intermittent electrical fault on a McLaren are different jobs. Call BMR Auto with the year, the model and what the car is doing, and we will tell you what the diagnostic costs before the car comes in. Further testing happens only with your approval.
Exotic and luxury cars are expensive to own, and a diagnosis that guesses wrong makes them more expensive still. BMR Auto charges fairly for the time it takes to find the real fault, and we treat every owner the way we would treat a friend or a member of our family. Owners mention our fair prices again and again in their reviews.
Your rights under Florida law
Under the Florida Motor Vehicle Repair Act, a shop must offer you a written estimate before diagnostic work or repairs begin on all but the smallest jobs, unless you waive it in writing. The estimate states the diagnostic charge or how it is calculated.
If the bill would run over the estimate by more than the small margin the law allows, the shop must stop and get your approval first. Any teardown charge is disclosed before diagnosis starts.

The software behind a diagnosis
Every maker has its own dealer system.
A generic code reader misses much of what the factory system sees. BMR Auto scans with dealer-level diagnostic software, and where a function needs the maker’s own system or online access, we tell you before the car comes in. This is the dealer system each make uses.
| Make | Dealer diagnostic system |
|---|---|
| BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce | ISTA |
| Mercedes-Benz, AMG, Maybach | XENTRY |
| Porsche | PIWIS |
| Bentley, Lamborghini | ODIS (Volkswagen Group) |
| Ferrari | Leonardo at dealers; DEIS and DEIS-Light offered by subscription |
| McLaren | McLaren dealer system |
| Maserati | Stellantis dealer system, behind a secure gateway from 2017 |
| Aston Martin | AMDS on the VH cars, AMDS 2.0 on the DB11 and later |
| Land Rover and Range Rover | SDD on older cars, Pathfinder on newer cars, with online programming through JLR TOPIx |
Key, immobilizer and some programming work on these cars needs security registration with the maker. Ask us what that means for your car before you book.
Diagnostics by brand
What we look for on your car.
Each make has its own systems and its own weak points. Here are the faults specialists see most on each make, and where the work has to go to the dealer.
BMW and BMW M diagnostics
BMW electronics are our specialty. We go past the codes into coding, module programming and cloning, and lithium battery recovery, which is where many BMW faults are actually fixed.
What owners bring in
- Warnings and dead functions after a battery change or a long stay parked
- Footwell (FRM), CAS and body module faults
- Lithium 12V battery lockout on newer models
- Check-engine and drivability faults, adaptive headlight faults
Mini diagnostics
Mini shares its electronics with BMW, so the same coding and module work applies.
What owners bring in
- Footwell module faults and reprogramming
- Electrical faults that come and go
Rolls-Royce diagnostics
The Ghost, Wraith and Dawn are built on BMW electronics, which is the work we know best. We also program Rolls-Royce keys, including new keys for 2009 to 2018 Ghost, Wraith and Dawn cars with every key lost.
What owners bring in
- Air suspension: the car sits low after parking, a compressor or strut fault, ride-height sensors
- Battery drain on the Ghost and Wraith
- Added keys, and cars with every key lost
The Spectre is electric; see hybrids and EVs below.
Bentley diagnostics
Bentley uses Volkswagen Group systems.
Common faults we check
- Continental GT air springs and a compressor that keeps running
- Electric parking brake faults
- Electrical warnings and service resets
Mercedes-AMG diagnostics
AMG cars run on the same Mercedes systems as the rest of the range, with more electronics to go wrong.
Common faults we check
- 48-volt lithium battery faults, which we repair
- Electrical and network warnings
- Air suspension and service resets
Ignition switch and key programming on many Mercedes models is done only by the dealer, and the newest models sit behind a secure gateway.
Mercedes-Maybach diagnostics
Maybach shares its systems with the S-Class and GLS, so the Mercedes tools and limits apply.
Key and ignition programming goes to the dealer.
Porsche diagnostics
Replacement modules on a Porsche must be coded to the car, and some models, including GT cars, use a lithium 12V battery that warns at low voltage.
Common faults we check
- Low-voltage warnings and battery drain
- Electrical and module faults after a part is replaced
- Check-engine and drivability faults
Taycan high-voltage battery recall work is done by the dealer.
Ferrari diagnostics
On the 458, about three weeks parked can drain the battery, and long storage can leave modules needing a reset.
Common faults we check
- 458: battery drain after about three weeks parked, front lift that stops holding, exhaust manifold cracks that set a check-engine light
- Dual-clutch transmission wear, read at service
- Warnings after storage
High-voltage battery work on the SF90 and 296 that Ferrari's hybrid warranty programs cover goes to a Ferrari dealer. Ferrari dealers tell hybrid owners to use the Ferrari battery conditioner when the car is stored for more than two weeks.
Lamborghini diagnostics
Lamborghini uses Volkswagen Group systems. Many intermittent Huracán warnings trace back to battery connections and corroded connector pins.
Common faults we check
- Huracán: intermittent check-engine, suspension and transmission warnings; MagneRide sensor faults
- Aventador: front or rear lift stuck, slow or leaking
- Urus: air suspension faults and wastegate actuator failure
McLaren diagnostics
Modern McLarens are known to drain their batteries within two to three weeks of sitting, and on the 720S a weak battery sets off a cascade of warnings.
Common faults we check
- Battery and low-voltage warnings
- 720S: suspension accumulator pressure loss, door struts, the folding instrument display
- Climate faults that log in the body modules, not the engine
Generic scan tablets cannot change McLaren configuration or program keys. BMR Auto makes McLaren keys with every key lost: see McLaren all keys lost. Artura battery health needs a McLaren-specific interface, and recall campaigns are closed out by a McLaren retailer.
Maserati diagnostics
Maserati models from 2017 sit behind a secure gateway that needs registration to unlock.
Call us with the model and the warning, and we will tell you plainly what we can check here and what goes to a Maserati dealer.
Aston Martin diagnostics
Aston Martin dealers use AMDS on the VH cars and AMDS 2.0 on the DB11 and later. The DB11 V8, the Vantage built from 2018, the DBX and the DB12 carry the Mercedes-AMG V8, and the DB11 brought Mercedes-Benz electronics.
Common faults we check
- V8 Vantage Sportshift: shift quality, clutch wear and whether the clutch learn has been run
- Battery drain after the car sits, and on affected DB11 V12 cars headlamps that stayed on in stop/start until a software update
- DB9 V12 ignition coil faults and misfires
Recall repairs and Aston Martin keys go to an Aston Martin dealer.
Land Rover and Range Rover diagnostics
Land Rover dealers use JLR’s SDD software on older cars and Pathfinder on newer ones. The 2003 to 2005 Range Rover and the V8 versions of the current Range Rover and Range Rover Sport carry BMW V8s.
Common faults we check
- Air suspension: the car sits low after parking, or the compressor runs long
- 5.0 supercharged V8: cold-start timing chain rattle, coolant leaks from the plastic crossover pipes
- Touchscreen and camera faults, some covered by recalls
Key programming and security modules need accredited access through JLR, and high-voltage work on the plug-in hybrids goes to a Land Rover dealer.
Hypercar diagnostics: Bugatti, Pagani, Koenigsegg, Rimac
Much of the work on these cars stays with the maker. Bugatti sends its own technicians to owners, and Rimac works through certified dealers such as Rimac Palm Beach.
Call us first, and we will tell you whether the job is one we can take on.
Batteries, storage and electrical faults
Low voltage is behind many exotic warning lights.
Exotic cars often sit for weeks between drives. A battery that drains while the car is parked leaves modules confused, and the dash fills with warnings that have nothing to do with the parts they name. Battery and electrical work is our specialty, so we start there.
Batteries and storage
We test the battery and charging system first, revive lithium 12V batteries when the cells are healthy, and register and code a new battery to the car when one is needed.
Hybrids and EVs
We diagnose and service hybrid and electric cars, including high-voltage battery work and the 12V side. Warranty and recall battery work is free at the dealer, and we tell you when it applies. See hybrid and EV batteries.
When we send you to the dealer
Recall and warranty campaigns, Mercedes ignition and key programming, hypercar factory work, and any function our tools cannot perform on your car. We tell you that up front.
Warning lights we diagnose
Check-engine (a flashing light means stop driving and call us), transmission, battery and charging, suspension and ride height, hybrid system, airbag, screens and audio.

Who works on your car
You talk to the people who work on your car.
KJ, who owns BMR Auto, has diagnosed BMWs and exotic cars in South Florida for more than ten years, and he still answers the phone. When you call, you speak with the people who will have your car on the lift.
After the diagnosis, we explain each finding in plain words, show you photos, and tell you what has to be fixed now and what can wait. We do not add work the car does not need. See About KJ and the team.

Diagnostic questions
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady, the car can usually be driven gently to us. If it is flashing, stop driving and call: a flashing light usually means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converters.
What is the difference between a code read and a diagnosis?
A code tells you which system reported a problem. A diagnosis uses live data and tests on the circuit or part to find what actually failed, so you only pay for the part that needs replacing.
How much does a diagnostic cost?
It depends on the car and the fault. Call BMR Auto with the year, the model and what the car is doing, and we will tell you the cost of the diagnostic before the car comes in. You then get a written estimate for the repair before any work starts.
How long does a diagnostic take?
It depends on the fault, and we tell you what to expect when you book. Intermittent faults can take longer, and we ask before going past the time you approved.
Do you use dealer-level software for my car?
Yes. We scan with dealer-level diagnostic software, which reads every module, the live data and the freeze-frame records a generic code reader misses. Where a job needs the maker’s own online system, we tell you before the car comes in. See the dealer system for each make.
Will an independent diagnosis affect my factory warranty?
Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because maintenance or repairs were done at an independent shop. It can still deny a specific claim if it shows the outside work or a part caused the failure, and repairs covered by the warranty or a recall are done free at the dealer. Keep the written invoice we give you for every job.
My car sat for weeks and now shows warnings. What happened?
Most likely the battery ran down while the car was parked, and the modules logged faults as the voltage dropped. We test the battery and charging first, then clear and recheck the warnings before replacing anything.
Can you find an electrical fault that comes and goes?
Yes. We start with the battery, grounds and connectors, then use live data to catch the fault when it happens. If it takes longer than planned, we ask you before we go on.
Do you diagnose hybrids and electric cars?
Yes. We find the fault, do high-voltage battery work and handle the 12-volt side. Warranty and recall work on the high-voltage battery is free at the dealer, and we tell you when that applies. See hybrid and EV batteries.
Will you tell me if the job should go to the dealer?
Yes, and before you pay us for it. Recall and warranty repairs, Mercedes ignition and key programming, and factory work on hypercars belong at the dealer, and we say so on the first call.
